What You’ll Need For This Easy Sew DIY Origami Bag:

How To Make An Easy Sew DIY Origami Bag

As you decided on your fabric make sure you have the right proportions to ensure your bag has the right shape. When making an Easy Sew DIY Origami Bag, the measurements need to be that the length is three times the width. My tea towels measured 31”x31”, so I was only able to cut them down to be 30.5”x10.5”. As far as bento bags go, this is on the small side. After researching the “ideal” size for a bento bag, you would shoot for 36.5”x12.5”, which includes your seam allowances. In the future, I will make them in the bigger sizing as those few inches add up when it comes to bag space.

pinning fabric

After you have measured and cut, place your 2 pieces of fabric down with the right sides together and pin or clip into place.

sewing seams

Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew all around the rectangle. Make sure you leave about a 3” opening on the bottom so that you can turn the fabric.

Trim your seams, being careful not to clip into your seam allowance. This will give the inside of your bad a cleaner look and get rid of some of the seam bulk.

turning inside out

Turn the bag right sides out and press. You may need to use a turning tool or a pencil to push out the inside corners.

combining two fabrics

With the fabric turned right side out, lay out the rectangle on your work surface horizontally.  Fold the rectangle into equal thirds, so you have 3 equal squares. Press flat with an iron. This will give you nice crisp fold lines you can sew in the next step.

Is the origami bag a great gift?

Personally I think this is really a cool gift idea. While bags are quite common when it comes to gifts, origami bags are not. Especially ones that are handmade by you! What that means is that once you make an origami bag, you can use it as a fun gift bag or even as the gift itself.

Think of ways that you can give these as Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, or honestly any occasion. A fun way would be to load it up with their favorite treats, some makeup items, or even those on the go essentials that you love and let them know that you’re thinking about them. This way the “gift wrapping” is a cute bag they can use as well.

What is the total cost of this easy sewing project?

As long as you have the majority of the sewing tools needed, this simple DIY bag shouldn’t cost you more than $5 to make. If using tea towels, you can use other fabric but depending on what fabric you chose it may affect the cost. This Origami bag is a simple, fast, and affordable bag that even a beginner can sew.
