With winter coming, I’m all about making some fun and simple ways to stay cozy. That’s why we are showing you how to make a no-sew fleece hat! This project is super easy to make. No sewing required, and you get a pom-pom, a fun cuff, and a really warm hat! This is one of those DIYs that is way easier than the end result looks.
Plus, who doesn’t love a fantastically squishy and fluffy hat? Pull it over your ears and you’re literally ready for some seriously chilly weather. Perfect for cold, windy days, it’s super thick and definitely going to cut down on frostbitten ears!
And you don’t have to use the buffalo check patterned fleece. You can use any combination of sherpa fleece and regular fleece. Think of it…pink on pink? Blue on blue? You could do some really cute combinations. These no-sew fleece hats are so easy to make, you could make any number of them and have a whole set to go with every outfit.
What You’ll Need:
- 1/3 yd sherpa fleece fabric
- 1/3 yd buffalo check fleece fabric
- Black yarn, optional
- Fabric tape measure
- Scissors
- Painter’s tape (or Masking tape)
- Exacto Knife
Let’s get started making this easy no-sew fleece hat.
How To Make A No-Sew Fleece Hat
First, measure the circumference of your head. Add two inches for a snug fit or add 4 inches for a slouchy fit. For example, my head measured at 21 ½ inches and I wanted a snug fit, so I needed 23 ½ inches for the width of the fabric for my hat. These are the measurements we’ll work with, to make the instructions clear, but you can simply replace the 23 ½ inch measurement with your own if you have a different measurement.
Next, measure both of the fleece fabrics and cut a rectangle from each that is 23 ½ inches by 14 inches. The best thing about making your own no-sew fleece hat is that it will fit perfectly and you can make it out of whatever fabrics and colors you want!
Lay the two rectangles of fleece on top of each other with the right sides facing (if your fleece has a right side).
Fold the 23 ½ inch long side horizontally on the bottom by one inch two times to create a cuff.
The next step in how to make a no-sew fleece hat is to fold the fabric in half vertically, keeping the cuff inside the fold. Your no-sew fleece at is starting to take shape!
Along the opposite side from the fold, starting at the bottom just above the cuff, using the exacto knife, cut slits about ½ inch long every 2-inches about ½ inch from the edge, stopping 2-3 inches from the edge to leave room for the tassels. You should have 6-7 slits when you’re done. Just make sure that you’re cutting all the way through all of the fabric. If you don’t, it will be hard to get the hat to stay together. Additionally, if you don’t have (or don’t want to use) an exacto knife, you can use scissors, just fold the fabric where you want a slit, then use just the very tip of your scissors to nip the center of the slit. When you have the center of the slit made, you can cut the slit on both sides of the center nip.
Next it’s time to bring the hat together. If you have yarn, use that, but if you don’t have yarn, cut a ¼ inch wide strip of the fleece (not the sherpa fleece) that is about 10 inches long. Thread the yarn or fleece strip through the slits in the fabric and knot it together at each end to tie it off.
Place a piece of masking tape 3 inches from the edge opposite of the cuff. On the masking tape, mark 1-inch sections.
With your scissors, cut 1-inch wide tassels, three inches long, using the masking tape as your guide. I tried to keep my tassels very straight, but as with cutting anything, sometimes the cut lines get off, so don’t sweat it if you get a little off. Because of how we’re going to trim the tassels in a later step, this will not matter at all.
Turn the hat right side out. This should press the seam inside the hat and the cuff outside the hat. We are almost done with our no-sew fleece hat!
Cut a ½-inch by 5-inch piece of fleece (not the sherpa fleece) and wrap it around the hat, just below the tassels you cut. Tie it tight and knot it in place. You can leave the ends long on the knot or trim them so they are hidden in the pom pom.
Trim the tassels to your liking, creating a pom pom. You can even cut the tassels lengthwise to make them a bit thinner, too.
Tuck the hat onto your head and enjoy! Your no-sew fleece hat is finished! If the hat seems too long, you can untie the fleece knot base of the pom pom and, cut the tassels lower and thereby shorten the hat.
This is just such a fun and useful project, I can’t tell you how excited I am to have made it–now if it would just get chilly outside! Making this fun no-sew fleece hat is a breeze. There are hardly any supplies, too, so this turns out to be a really inexpensive project. If you can find the fleece on sale, too, that’s going to make it even more inexpensive. I think I might make a couple in the slouchy form for the kids and another for myself that’s slouchy, too. This is a great project to get the kids in on. I’m hoping they’ll volunteer to make some of these hats for their teachers this year.
