Supplies for Chapstick Holder Keychain

For this easy DIY project you should have most of the items on hand if you sew or craft often. The main thing that you may have to go out and get is the Clip for the Chapstick holder. I happened to already have some from a previous project I needed them for. I have plenty of scrap fabric and interfacing lying around so I am ready to start sewing the Chapstick holder keychain!

Easy DIY Chapstick Holder Keychain

Before I begin any sewing project, especially when using cotton fabric I like to wash, dry and iron the fabric. This sets the fabric and gets it ready for the project. Remember that fabric choice is the fun part! So choose something that speaks to you!

Chapstick holder steps 1 & 2

For the first 2 steps, you will cut two pieces of your cotton fabric and two pieces of interfacing 2.5″ x 7″.

In addition, cut one piece of cotton fabric 1.5″ x 3″.

Now iron interfacing on the wrong side of both larger pieces of fabric.

Chapstick holder step 3

For the next step in making your chapstick holder you will want the right sides facing, then pin or clip pieces together.

Chapstick Holder step 4

Now that we are halfway finished with your DIY Chapstick Keychain Holder you will sew along both sides and the bottom of your fabric.

Chapstick Holder step 5

Next – you’ll want to clip the corners. Sometimes people forget to do this step and it makes turning your project a little harder and your corners feel bulky – so be sure to clip the corners then turn your fabric right side out.

Then press it flat.

Chapstick Holder Step 6

Now we will work with the smaller piece of fabric. Fold each side over until it meets in the middle and press, then fold in half and press. Ironing the fabric generally makes it easier to work with – so don’t skip this step!

This will be the piece that connects the holder to the clip.

Chapstick Holder Step 7

Now we will fold the bottom up 2.5″ on the main piece of fabric that we sewed the bottoms and edge and clip into place.

Chapstick Holder Step 8

Now sew along both sides and the bottom to make the chapstick pouch part. You can go ahead and clip your clip through your smaller folder piece of fabric before the next step in making your DYI chapstick holder.

Chapstick Holder Step 9

Finally to complete your DIY chapstick keychain, feed the small piece of fabric through the bottom of the clip. Slip the bottom of the fabric piece into the opening of the holder, making sure it is in the halfway point of the opening. Then sew into place!
