Easy Sew Halloween Candy Corn Tote

Easy Sew Halloween Candy Corn Tote

Halloween is coming up fast and we’re already in the process of getting ready with some awesome halloween DIY projects including this Easy Sew Halloween Candy Corn Tote! It’s a great way to get the kiddo a fun, personal element of their halloween costume that they can even help with, if you’re so inclined.

And, if you have some orange, yellow, white and pale yellow fabric laying around as scraps from other projects, this is a great way to knock those out into a very useful project. Who doesn’t love a fantastic scrap-buster project?!  It’s basically just an all-around great halloween sewing project that you can have made in just a few minutes! So, let’s get started making this easy candy corn tote bag.

What You’ll Need:

Like I said, this is a great project if you’re wanting to knock out some scraps. So, look in your scrap fabric bin (you know, the one where all the leftover bits go) and grab any orange, yellow and white fabric you might have.

Also when you’re choosing the fabric you make your candy corn tote with, if you want this bag to be a super long-term heirloom piece, I would recommend making sure your fabric is thick and sturdy. Because the kids are likely to manhandle this bag with abandon as they collect candy madly in the night, the idea that this bag might wear and tear is highly likely. So, thicker is better if you expect this to last for more than one trick-or-treat event.

Now, another thing to think about is size. You can certainly go larger with your tote than I did, or even smaller, but I was trying to make a reasonable size for any sized kiddo. Go too big and the smaller kids will be dragging it. Go too small and the big kids feel like they’re not getting any candy. It’s a tradeoff you have to think about.

Now, onto the actual project (because, let’s be honest, this candy corn tote bag is a lot easier to make than all that chit-chat would make you think).

How To Make An Easy Sew Halloween Candy Corn Tote

Cutting fabric for candy corn tote

First, you want to cut the following:

  1. Two Panels 5-inch by 14-inch in Orange Fabric
  2. Two Panels 5-inch by 14-inch in Bright Yellow Fabric
  3. Two Panels 5-inch by 14-inch in White Fabric
  4. Two Panels 4-inch by 16 ½-inch in Orange Fabric for the Handles
  5. Two Panels 14-inch by 15-inch in Pale Yellow Fabric for the Liner

To get started making the exterior part of the candy corn tote bag, pin together the two 5×14 orange panels along one long side and sew together.

ironing seam flat

Iron the seam open and flat. This will give your halloween candy corn tote bag a nice, flat appearance.

Do the same thing for the other panels. Pin a bright yellow panel and white panel together along one long side and sew together.

Again, you’ll want to iron the seam open and flat. Repeat with the remaining bright yellow and white panels so you have two identical yellow/white panels.

Pin orange and yellow panels together

Time to join them together. Pin the un-sewn long side of the white panel to one long side of the orange panels.

Sew panels together, make sure to iron the seam open and flat like you did for the others.

Repeat with the remaining yellow/white panel, affixing it to the last remaining un-sewn long side of the orange panel. Set this bag exterior piece aside. Your Halloween Candy Corn Tote is starting to take shape.

ironing handles for Halloween candy corn tote

Make a handle by folding one of the 16 ½-inch panels in half and ironing it to make a nice, clean line.

pin handle for tote

Fold the hem inside the folded panel and iron this down, then pin it in place. Fold each end inside the handle and iron it down, then pin it.

turn Halloween candy corn tote right side out

Turn the bag exterior piece right side out and slide the liner piece inside the exterior piece. Line up the hemmed portions and the top.

Fold the unhemmed tops of both the exterior and the interior pieces inward between the two pieces and pin them in place.

sewing tops together

Sew the two folded tops together.

measuring handle placements

Measure 3 inches inward from the outside hem and 1 ½ inch down along the top edge of the tote. Place one end of a handle at this location and pin it in place.

sewing Halloween candy corn tote handles

Sew the handle in place on the tote. Repeat with the other handle ends and enjoy your new candy corn tote! If the handles are too long, you can tie them up in a knot and, because the fabric is not a slick material, the knots will stay in place. Then your little tote-bag-needing monster or ghost or princess will be able to gather as much candy as they can handle!

finished Halloween Candy Corn Tote

This is just such a fun and useful project, I can’t tell you how excited I am to have made it. I think I could have made this in a smaller format, but the kids are more geared to wanting a giant bag to fill. So, choices were made and I went with the concept that candy will be flowing, even though we’ve never collected enough candy to even fill half this bag. This Halloween candy corn tote project isn’t for me, It is for the kids, so bigger is better in their opinion!
