When my sewing friend, Debbie, showed me this pattern I knew I had to make it! I don’t have many hats that aren’t winter hats, so I could not wait to make this cute hat for you. This is a great project if you have been looking for something fresh and unique you can make. You can even add a little personalization to this hat if you want. The included free pattern makes it a breeze to cut out your fabric so you can focus on putting it together. I used a heavier canvas fabric for this hat for structure and added durability, but it is really up to you what fabric you choose. I made one side a printed fabric and one side solid color. You can make a few of these hats and match them to your favorite outfits!

This hat has a subtle brim and can be worn by both men and women. Make your hat from fun florals or solid staples. Reversible Bucket Hat Supplies

Size Chart:

The hat is designed for a head circumference of 20″ up to 25”. It will fit a head that is between 20 and 25” in circumference. The pattern is designed for 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25 inches. To measure your head, take your tape measure and wrap it around the section of your head that is above your ears. Do not allow for any ease in the measurement.

Printing Instructions

This bucket hat pattern has layers, so that you can choose to print only the size you need. To achieve this Adobe Reader must be installed on your machine or device. Adobe Reader allows you to click on the layers icon which will show you each size with an eyeball beside it. Click on the eyeball beside the size you do not want to print.

Before printing check that your printer is set to No scaling or Actual size. Set the Page orientation to Auto or Portrait. And then print page 1. Measure the 2” test square to see if it measures exactly 2”. If it does, print the remaining pages.

Trimming Pages

Cut off the right and top margins of each printed page before assembling the pattern. You can use tape or school glue to adhere your paper pattern together. 

Pattern Assembly

After the pages have been printed and trimmed as instructed above, use the quarter circles located at the corner of each page for perfect alignment.  When done your pattern should look like this: 

Pattern Pieces Checklist

Once you have printed and assembled your pattern you will cut for each hat : 

Crown – Cut 1 
Middle – cut on fold  – Cut 2 on fold
Brim – cut on fold – cut 2  on fold
Decorative Trim – Cut 2 on fold

Seam Allowance

Use a 3/8” seam allowance unless otherwise instructed.

Using the reversible bucket hat pattern

The first step on this how to make a reversible bucket hat sewing tutorial is to wash, dry, and press our fabric. This helps act as a preshrink as well as making it easier to get clean, crisp cuts. Once this is done, place your assembled pattern pieces on the fabric and cut them out.

These are the pattern pieces you should have when finished cutting. You will have two sets of pieces for two hats that we will join together. I went with a solid color and a print fabric, but you could make them out of complimentary sold colors or pick out some cute print fabric for both sides. It’s up to you, so let your creativity run free!

For both hats, pin the middle, brim, and decorative trim right sides together at the short ends. I’ve overlayed some dashes to illustrate where to sew.

Sew the middle, brim, and decorative trim pieces together with a 3/8″ seam allowance. Do this for both hats.

Pin the matching middle to the crown like the above photo.

Make sure to pin all the way around. Repeat these same steps for the other side of your reversible hat.

Now, simply sew the crown to the middle hat piece using a 3/8 seam allowance.

Pin it to the middle piece that you want the trim on aligning the hat seams. I chose to add trim to the print side of my hat and not the sold it color side. If you wanted to add trim to both sides, just repeat these steps.

Sew the trim to the hat about 1/8” from the folded edge.

Now on this how to make a reversible bucket hat sewing tutorial, we are going to pin the hat brim to the middle piece. Pin it all the way around with right sides facing in, making sure to align the seams.

Sew on the hat brim using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Repeat these steps so that you have two basically complete hats, in our case one red and one print fabric.

Leave and mark a 2 inch opening when you are pinning the hats together. This will leave us a gap to turn the reversible bucket hat right side out in a later step.

Sew all the way around the brim through both hat layers. I kept my sewing foot lined up with the edge of the hat brim.

Assemble the hats so that they fit nicely together. Pin the opening closed, making sure to fold the raw edges in.

Instructions

  1. Print your free pattern. Use it to cut out your fabric pieces. 
  2. For both hats, pin the middle, brim, and decorative trim right sides together at the short ends. 
  3. Sew the middle, brim, and decorative trim pieces together. Do this for both hats.
  4. Fold the crown in half and mark at the center.
  5. Pin the middle to the crown. 
  6. Repeat for the other crown.
  7. Sew the crown to the middle hat piece.
  8. Repeat for the other hat pieces - sew the crown and the middle pieces together. 
  9. Sew the crown to the middle piece."
  10. If adding decorative trim, fold the trim in half wrong sides together. Pin it to the middle piece aligning the hat seams. Sew the trim to the hat 1/8” from the folded edge.
