How To Make A Triangle Coin Purse Sewing Tutorial

As with any sewing project, I always like to start by washing, drying, and ironing my fabric. This acts as a preshrink so my stitches don’t pull out in the wash and the fabric is nice and soft. It is easier to make precise cuts when it is pressed. Once you have done that, it’s time to start making this triangle coin purse. Take your main fabric piece and attach it to the batting by quilting in any pattern you like. I did horizontal lines, which I marked first with a chalk pencil.

Place main piece right side up, and line up the outer edge of the zipper, the wrong side up on the short side of the main piece. Then, place the lining piece (the green in this case) on top, the wrong side down. Clip or pin together to hold it in place. The brighter liner color will make it easier to see into our coin purse.

Now it’s time to start sewing this Triangle Coin Purse! Using a zipper foot and a 1/4” seam allowance, sew the pieces together.

Turn everything upside down so the main piece and zipper are right sides facing up and the liner is underneath. Topstitch the main piece onto the zipper to secure it.

Fold the main piece in half, right sides together, so it’s even with the edge of the zipper. Do the same with the lining fabric, so it is laying on top of the zipper. We are about halfway through this how to make a triangle coin purse sewing tutorial!

Clip or pin together. Using a zipper foot, sew the pieces together using about a 1/4″ seam allowance. Take your time and don’t rush and you’ll be fine.

Turn your piece right side out and unzip. This triangle coin purse is really starting to come together! So cute!

Next, you’re going to topstitch along the zipper on the lining side this time like you did in the previous sewing step. Because the area you are working with is smaller here, go slow and steady and maneuver like the power seamstress you are!

Switch your zipper foot back out to your standard sewing foot. Zip your Triangle Coin Purse closed and turn it inside out, so your lining is showing with the right side facing out. Flatten your piece with your zipper in the middle, positioned horizontally. Clip or pin together the excess zipper and sew.

Unzip your zipper halfway. With your right thumb and pointer finger, pinch the rectangle closed with the zipper towards one of the edges. The opening of your Triangle Coin Purse Open should be on the bottom (see photo.) Clip or pin closed.

Sew along the edge using a regular sewing stitch with a 3/8” seam allowance. This will close the opening.

Lastly on this how to make a triangle coin purse sewing tutorial, take your scissors and trim off the excess zipper. Turn it right side out and you are finished!

Now you have a super cute way to keep track of all your loose change. We hope you enjoyed this how to make a Triangle Coin Purse Sewing Tutorial! This little coin purse is sure to get lots of attention with it’s unique design and colors. You can also use this little coin purse for different small items as well. It can be a great way to keep track of items when you’re not quite certain where else to put them in your bag.
You can also use this triangle coin purse as a great gift idea for friends as well. Since this is homemade and unique in shape, why not give this to family and friends so that they can enjoy using it, too. I made some for my kids to put their little allowance money in and they love it.
Can you wash this triangle coin purse?
You can but you’re going to want to be careful with it. And more than likely, you’ll be washing it if you’re storing small items or chapsticks and lipsticks in it. You can easily turn it inside out so that it does well in the washer and I’d even consider washing it on delicate as well.
When it comes to drying it, I’d lay it out flat to dry and let it dry naturally. Putting it in the dryer might cause the zipper part to rip or cause other issues to the fabric.
