I know many of us have furry loved ones, so I decided to do a sewing project for them. There is no reason we can’t sew things for our dogs or cats or whatever your pet is. In many cases, our pets are smaller which makes the projects easier. I decided to go simple at first with this how to sew a dog bandana as I thought this would be a better beginner project than a full outfit for our pet. I figured this way when we take family pictures around the tree the little fur baby can have something on as well.
This project doesn’t take a whole lot to make so If you’re anything like me, you’ve got fabric scraps or fat quarters in abundance just laying around that you can use. So, it’s not like you even have to get dressed and go out to get supplies. This is one of the easier sewing projects I’ve done in a while. Let’s get started sewing this dog bandana.
SUPPLIES FOR SEWING A DOG BANDANA
- Scrap Fabric of your choosing ( I used Flannel)
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Sewing Pins or clips
- Thread
- Scissors
- Safety pins
- As with most sewing projects you will need an iron, ironing board, and sewing machine.
HOW TO SEW A DOG BANDANA
Wash, dry and press the fabric of your choice. I have found that the end result has fewer flaws when I pre-prep my fabrics with wash, dry and press. Remember you can always customize the fabrics to your liking. Now on to the measuring, cutting and sewing of the dog bandana.
Depending on the size of your dog will depend on how much fabric you need for the dog bandana. To make this easier on you I have classified the sizes from x-small all the way to extra large for those big dogs. So you will need to measure and cut the fabric for your appropriate sized dog.
- X-Large- 40” wide x 17.5” long
- Large- 34” wide x 14” long
- Medium- 28” wide x 12.5” long
- Small- 23” wide x 9.5” long
- X-Small- 17” wide x 7” long
For us, I would classify our dog as a small. So I measured out a piece of fabric according to the width I needed. The small has a 23” width that I measured and cut. From the center of the width, measure down the length for the point of the triangle. Since our dog is a small I measured 9.5”. From the bottom of the point of the triangle, measure and cut two straight lines to the ends of the 23” width to make a triangle shape.
Once your triangle is cut out, fold one of the edges over onto the backside of the fabric about 1/4” twice and pin.
Repeat on the other two edges folding them over onto the backside of the fabric about 1/4” twice and pin.
Carefully sew all three the edges. Make sure to cut any remaining loose threads.
Your dog bandana is now ready! Now you know how to sew a dog bandana! Like I said this is such a simple sewing project it takes no time to complete so you can make multiple dog bandanas for your pup. Always supervise your dogs while they are wearing bandanas.

Nice bandanas. You could use some madras plaid fabric to make these, though the sewing process would be slightly different in terms of cutting the plaids, so as to make sure the plaid repeats itself correctly. I would use plaid madras These would turn out lovely in plaids.
Very nice. I’m making two different sizes
I made the small with two fabrics so I can reverse it. Going to make more so “Pouncer” can have a nice wardrobe.
