How to Sew Women’s Sleep Shorts

Before getting started with this awesome sleep shorts tutorial, you will want to print and piece together your pattern!

Start to cut the fabric using the pattern for sleep shorts

Before I begin any sewing project I like to wash, dry, and iron my fabric. This helps prevent shrinkage after sewing. Let’s start your shorts project with that important step, first.

Next, we will start to cut the fabric, using the pattern. Don’t forget to adjust the size to the one you want, in this case, we are using the measurements for a size M. Fold the fabric in two and pin the pattern to the fabric, cut it and you will now have 2 fronts and 2 backs.

Fold the bottom up 1 cm twice

Start by folding the bottom part of the front, about 1cm, and fold it again. This way, even if you don’t have an overlock machine, you don’t have a problem if the fabric starts to come off.

Sew bottom hem on all 4 pieces

Repeat this step with all four parts of fabric. (2front+2back). This will prep every panel of your new sleep shorts! You’ll be making these in no time!

Sew the front and back together with fronts touching

After that, pick the corresponding front and back part and join them together by the sides. They should be inside out. Sew the sides with a 1cm difference between them.

Fold the bigger part over and sew again

Fold the larger part over the other, using the previous seam as a guide.

Open both parts and fold the seam covering the end of the fabric, sew.

When that part of how to make women’s sleep shorts with free pattern tutorial is complete, open both parts and fold the seam that you have, covering the end of the fabric. Sew down this seam for reinforcement.

Sew your broderie anglaise on to the hems

Time to apply the broderie anglaise. This fabric adds a little elegance to these sleep shorts. If the broderie anglaise strip is large, sew from the inside part of the shorts. The the broderie anglaise strip is narrow, sew it on the front, covering the other seam. These shorts are going to be so cute!

Fold the fabric and sew the crotch part of the women's sleep shorts

We are about halfway finished with our how to sew women’s sleep shorts tutorial! For the next step, you fold the fabric and sew the crotch part of your shorts.

Repeat the process we used on the side seams

Once you’ve done that, simply repeat the process we used before on the sides.

Repeat all the process to the other leg of sleep shorts

With one leg done, you will repeat all the processes to the other leg. These sleep shorts are really starting to come together!

Join the back parts together from the inside

Now that we have both legs done, we need to sew them together. If you join the back parts together, from inside part, you will notice that it’s easier to sew if you put one leg inside the other. This is a sewing trick that saves a lot of time! You’ll want to remember this for future projects!

sewing around sleep shorts

Using the same methods you did above, sew all the way around the shorts. There should be no raw edges. We are almost ready to put the cute sleep shorts on!

women's sleep shorts done

For the last step in how to make women’s sleep shorts with free pattern tutorial, we just have to apply the elastic band on the top of the sleep shorts. This will make them nice and comfy to wear. Be sure to sew your elastic band ends together before moving on to the next step in this how-to.

Cut your elastic

If you are using a wider elastic band, you can just fold over the fabric one time. If your elastic is thinner, you can fold over the fabric twice. Just make sure the band has some room to move around either way. Once you have that, fold over a 1cm lip and sew that to create the pocket for the elastic.

Sew the elastic inside a shorts fold

Now you can sew it all around, but don’t sew over the elastic band as it should be free to move around inside the fold you created. If you are using 2 elastics for a larger size, make sure you give enough fabric allowance for it when you make the folds.
