Seriously, every girl needs a good headband to keep her hair out of her face and off her neck sometimes. Why not make your own? I’ve rounded up the supplies you will need and provided a super easy tutorial for you to use when making your own turban headband. Let’s get crafty!

What You’ll Need:

- ⅛ yard Stretchy Knit (Jersey) Fabric
- Matching thread
- Turning tool or chopstick
- Iron
- Pins
- Scissors
- Optional Rotary Cutter & Mat
- Measuring tape
- Thread nippers
- Sewing machine
First things first, let’s talk about what you need to make this easy sew turban headband. To make one headband, you’ll need roughly ⅛ yard stretchy knit (I used jersey fabric in colors selected by my anticipated wearers, my kids) fabric and matching thread. As far as the necessary tools, you’ll need a pair of good scissors; a needle or sewing machine, (although a sewing machine is not required – this can certainly be made by hand-sewing); and a straight-edge and/or ruler. The ruler is just to measure your initial cut and the straight edge is for keeping that cut straight, so whatever you have on hand to accomplish those two activities will work. You’ll also want some sewing pins or some other way to hold the fabric in place.
Easy Sew Turban Headband

The first step in this easy sew turban headband tutorial is to cut the fabric to 19 inches long by 8 inches wide. This is the size I used for my kiddo’s head as they were the anticipated wearer of the headbands. However, if you are making this for a typical adult, a length of 21 inches is the recommended length. If you are planning on making this headband for a child younger than 6 years old, I would measure the circumference of their head and work with that measurement, as it may be significantly less than the 19-inches.

Next, fold the rectangle of fabric right-side to right-side and pin in place.

Now on this easy sew turban headband tutorial, head over to your sewing machine and sew it in place with a ¼-inch hem. Take care to go back and forth at the beginning and end of the hem in order to limit any unraveling of the hem. Keep in mind that you will need to do this with each hemline.

Once hemmed, turn the rectangle of fabric right-side out and fold it in half vertically with the hem on the left-hand side.

Then you will fold the rectangle of fabric horizontally in half with the two open ends laying side-by-side in a tight “v” shape (with each side still folded in half vertically with the hem on the inside of the “v” on both sides – meaning do not twist the fabric).

Next on this easy sew turban headband tutorial, unfold the open end of each side of the “v” about 2-inches from the open end.

Overlap the right arm of the “v” on top of the left arm of the “v” by about ½ of the width. We are about halfway through this easy sew turban headband tutorial!

Fold the left arm of the “v” on top of the overlapped section.

Fold the right arm of the “v” on top of the overlapped section. This will create a folded stack.

Next on this easy sew turban headband tutorial, pin the folded stack in place at the end and sew it in place with a ¼-inch hem.

Fold the right side over by about ⅓ of the width and pin it in place.

Then sew it in place with a ¼-inch hem.

And that’s it! Now you know how to make an easy sew turban headband! Trim the ends and iron the headband, if desired, then put it on your wearer! Or, once you have it sewn together, you can add some cute trimming around the edges! You can use ribbons or lace, a button or snap – anything you think will look fun. The best part is the way this headband looks when you’re done, though. Because of the “knot”, it looks like a super complicated piece, but really it’s just a nice little twist. So, you could really make this in just a few minutes, especially if you make several in a row and get really good at it. So, go grab your fabric and make all the turban headbands you can stand!
