If you have ever gone in the stores to buy some, you know these cloths come in different sizes. So for this, we don’t do a pattern. The one you see here is 10″x18″. I’ve made them shorter or longer with scrap fabric in the past. This project doesn’t take a whole lot to make, so if you’re anything like me, the fabric scraps you have just laying around will be more than enough. For this specific tutorial, we will go with 10×18 size cloth.

How To Make A Baby Burp Cloth

First thing you will want to do is to wash, dry, and iron the fabric you have decided to use. This will ensure you have a clean and crisp material to work with. Plus when you pre-wash and dry it, the fabric won’t be shrinking and pulling causing issues later.

Flannel, fleece, and terry cloth are the most absorbent so I use these for my burp cloths. But you can use a character fabric for one side and the terry cloth for the other. It’s up to you. Once you have decided on your fabric, it’s time to get started. Start by laying out your flannel or other fabric out flat. I like to iron it so it’s perfectly flat. It makes it easier to cut and work with. Next, cut out the 10 x 18 rectangle, I use a rotary cutter and mat when I can as it makes it easier. Take the fabric and lay it out on a piece of terry cloth and cut out the same size piece. Terry cloth is used for the side of the baby burp cloth that will soak up all the fun stuff the baby spits up.

pinning burp cloth fabric

Clip or pin the two pieces together with the pattern side facing in to hold them in place. This helps when you are starting to sew. This will be much like sewing a pillow. We already did an entire tutorial on that process. You can find it here. You’ll flip this inside out later for the final steps of the burp cloth.

Staring at the halfway point on the end, stitch all the way around making sure to leave a small hole at the end when you stitch back around. This is so that you can flip the fabric right side out in the next step. We are getting so close to completing our baby burp cloth project!

Once you’ve stitched all the way around, pull the fabric through the hole and make sure all the edges are pushed out. If you need to, you can use a chopstick or turning tool or anything that is convenient for you. Fold the hole in and topstitch to close it. You can do a top stitch all the way around if you like. I don’t feel like this is needed, but you can do what you feel comfortable with. I do, however, stitch all the way across the end when closing the hole. I find the end product looks much nicer than just a small hole stitch. Again, this is up to you and your preference.

sewing folds

For the last part, I divided the baby burp cloth into three sections by folding them. Next, press them to mark the folds and stitch down them. This will create an easy way to fold the cloth when going into the diaper bag. This is totally optional, but it makes it easier for folding up in the long run.

Once you are done stitching the folds, you’re done! This DIY Baby Burp cloth has lots of uses. Obviously, you can use it to wipe up whatever comes your way from your little one, but you can also use it as a placemat, a changing pad, a tiny blanket, a tissue, a washcloth, and more! These are just a few ideas. As parents, we are constantly having to be more creative in the ways we love and take care of our children. I hope this little sewing project helps you along your journey.
