** This pattern is drafted for a height of 5’ 4”- 5” 5” so you may need to length or shorten the pattern if required.  

The skirt finishes above the knee. To lengthen the skirt  increase the length of all the  pattern pieces  by the same amount ( 2-3” should be enough to make it knee length) .

Pattern Printing Instructions

This pattern has layers, so that you can choose to print only the size you need. To achieve this Adobe Reader must be installed on your machine or device. Adobe Reader allows you to click on the layers icon which will show you each size with an eyeball beside it. Click on the eyeball beside the size you do not want to print.

Before printing check that your printer is set to No scaling or Actual size. Set the Page orientation to Auto or Portrait. And then print page 1. Measure the 2” test square to see if it measures exactly 2”. If it does, print the remaining pages.

Trimming Pages

Cut off the right and top margins of each printed page before assembling the pattern. You can use tape or school glue to adhere your paper pattern together. 

Pattern Assembly

After the pages have been printed and trimmed as instructed above, use the quarter circles located at the corner of each page for perfect alignment.  When done your pattern should look like this:

  • Connectors – Cut 2 on Fold

Once you have the pattern printed out and assembled, I like to wash, dry, and iron my fabric before I cut it according to the pattern. This gives me nice, crisp cut lines. Next on the how to make a ruffle skirt sewing tutorial, fold the connectors, ruffles and upper skirt right sides together, aligning the short ends. Pin or clip in place.

Sew the ends together with a 3/8” seam allowance.

  Finish the edges with a pinking shear or zigzag stitch.

Set your sewing machine to the longest stitch and sew a basting /  gathering stitch ¼” from the raw edge on the upper part of all the ruffle pieces. Ensure you leave long thread tails to gather the fabric.  

Divide the top end of each ruffle fabric into into quarters.

Sew the hem 1/8” from the fold.

Divide the top end of the connectors into quarters by marking with pins / clips.  Divide the ruffles into quarters by marking with pins / clips if you have not already done so. With right sides together pin the connector to the ruffle , aligning the side seam. Both the connector and the ruffle should be the same width.

Sew ruffle skirt piece and connecter together using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Repeat this step for the other connector and ruffle pieces.

Take tier 2 (middle tier) and fold the connector so that its wrong sides is exposed.

Take tier 3 and slide it into tier 2 (i.e the right side of tier 3 should be touching the wrong side of tier 2). Pin the connector of tier 3 to the seam of tier 2 aligning side seams.

Sew both tiers together. We will now call this the Lower Skirt.

Take the last ruffle piece and pin it to the lower skirt and sew.

Pin the Upper skirt to the lower skirt and sew.

To sew the elastic band casing. Fold the upper skirt wrong sides together by 1/4” then by another 1”. Sew 1/8” from the fold, leaving a 2” opening to insert your elastic.

Attach your elastic to a safety pin and insert it into the skirt.

Overlap the two ends by ½” and stich securely.

Sew the opening closed.

The last step in the how to make a ruffle skirt sewing tutorial is to finish the raw edges of the seams on the inside of the skirt by using a serger, zigzag stitch or pinking shears.
