Today on Happiest Camper, I am finally making a project that has been requested a lot. I’m going to show you How To Make A Skort! If you are unfamiliar with skorts, a skort is a pair of shorts with an overlapping fabric panel made to resemble a skirt covering the front. However you choose to rock this forever trendy style, you’ll be sure to turn heads as you go by. The skort is a super comfy pair of shorts with an elastic waistband in the back for easy wear and all day comfort. This is perfect for those warm weather days or you could even wear them with leggings when it gets cool. This is a simple sewing project and the included free sewing pattern makes it quick to sew. I used some nice cotton fabric and I think they turned out great. They are great to work out in as well. If you have been looking for a fun new project to make, try out these skorts!

Printing Instructions

This pattern has layers, so that you can choose to print only the size you need. To achieve this Adobe Reader must be installed on your machine or device. Adobe Reader allows you to click on the layers icon which will show you each size with an eyeball beside it. Click on the eyeball beside the size you do not want to print.

Before printing check that your printer is set to No scaling or Actual size. Set the Page orientation to Auto or Portrait. And then print page 1. Measure the 2” test square to see if it measures exactly 2”. If it does, print the remaining pages.

Trimming Pages

Cut off the right and top margins of each printed page before assembling the pattern. You can use tape or school glue to adhere your paper pattern together. 

Pattern Assembly

After the pages have been printed and trimmed as instructed above, use the quarter circles located at the corner of each page for perfect alignment.  When done your pattern should look like this:

Pattern Pieces Checklist

Once you have printed and assembled your pattern you will cut:

  • Shorts Back – Cut 2 mirrored
  • Shorts Front – Cut 2 Mirrored
  • Skirt – Cut 2 – 1 main, 1 lining
  • Shorts Back Waistband – Cut 1 on fold
  • Shorts Front Facing – Cut 1 on Fold 

Seam Allowance

Use a 3/8” seam allowance unless otherwise instructed.

How To Make A Skort

Start this how to make a skort sewing tutorial by washing and drying your fabric. This helps preshrink your fabric and prepares it for washing later so that your stitches don’t pull out or fray the first time you wash it. Plus, it helps make the fabric super soft. Once you have done this, use your pattern to cut out your fabric pieces.

Pin the two skirt pieces right sides together and sew two sections labeled as “hem” on the pattern piece.

Pin and sew your two shorts front at the crotch. Repeat for the back shorts pieces.

Pin the skirt and the front shorts at the waist and side seam both should be right sides facing up. When pinning ensure that the sewn seam of the skirt is pinned 3/4” away from the side seam.

Next on this how to make a skort sewing tutorial, take the facing and place it wrong sides up on top of the skirt. Align it to the waist and pin. Sew through all layers. 

Pin waistband to shorts & sew

Pin the waistband to the shorts back right sides together and sew.

Fold the waistband wrong sides together by 1/4” then fold the waistband towards the shorts enclosing the seams. Head back over to your sewing machine and sew.

Next on this how to make a skort sewing tutorial, we will work on the waistband. To determine what size elastic to use – divide your waist measurement into 2 and subtract 1”. Cut your elastic according to your results. Attach a safety pin to the elastic and insert it into the channel in the back shorts.

Baste the ends of the elastic in place. Also, use the opportunity to understitch the facing of the front shorts.

Finish the raw edges of the facing and fold the facing to the wrong sides of the short and baste it down at the side seams.

Now, hem all shorts legs by double folding by 1/2” and sew.

Instructions

  1. Use Pattern to cut out fabric.
  2. Pin the two skirt pieces right sides together and sew two sections labelled as “hem” on the pattern piece.
