What You’ll Need:

How To Make An Ice Cream Cozy

cut out fabric and batting for ice cream bowl cozy

Step 1.

The first step in the how to make an ice cream cozy sewing tutorial is to cut out your fabric. You’ll need to cut two 10″ x 10″ squares from your main fabric and two 10″ x 10″ squares of cotton batting. After you have cut out all your fabric pieces, place one piece of your cotton squares on top of your batting, with the right side facing up.

clip pieces together

Clip together. Repeat with the other fabric and batting pieces.

sew an "x" across each bowl cozy piece

Now on this how to make an ice cream cozy sewing tutorial, sew an “x” on each piece, sewing from corner to corner. I like to use a walking foot when I’m using batting because with such bulky layers, and with many layers, the walking foot prevents shifting of the fabric. This proved very helpful as I got further into the construction of these microwave bowl cozies and had multiple layers that I was sewing through. If you don’t have a walking foot, just go slow.

fold in half and sew corners diagonally to make pleats

Step 2. Sew pleats

Take one of your layers and fold in half. Clip the open side together and mark on each corner of the folded edge, 1″ in and 2″ down with a marker. Do this on both corners. Then sew a straight line from one point to the next.

trim excess fabric from bowl cozy

Trim the excess from the pleats. Then fold in half the other way and repeat that same process to sew the pleats.

Step 3. Make Bowl

place other ice cream bowl cozy piece inside other one

Take the other piece and turn the fabric side face down, and place inside of the other bowl. You want both fabrics facing each other, and the batting is on the outside.

clip around, leaving gap to turn

Clip or pin all the way around. Sew around the edges with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Leave an opening for turning.

Step 4. Finish Edges

Turn the bowl right side out. The opening I left was small because I wanted it between a corner and a pleat. So carefully turn so you don’t rip out any stitches. Poke out the corners.

pin and sew edge opening together

Then fold the edges of the opening in by about a 1/4″ and clip together.

topstitch around the ice cream bowl cozy

Lastly on this how to make an ice cream cozy sewing tutorial, sew a topstitch about 1/8″ away from the edge.
