How to Make Baby Bibs with Free Pattern

I love sewing but there is something about sewing a project and giving it as a gift for a new bundle of joy! I know there are tutorials for making newborn baby bibs but I haven’t shared one with yall. Plus a friend is having a baby shower so what better timing for me to make a baby bib tutorial. Plus the baby bib will help keep those cute clothes and baby clean while they eat. I am going to show you how to make baby bibs with free pattern. I share the free baby bib pattern in the supplies list for you to print and use. Once you make one, you will realize how easy they are to make and probably do like me and sew a few more.

This project doesn’t take a whole lot to make so If you’re anything like me, you’ve got fabric scraps in abundance just laying around that you can use. This is one of the easier baby sewing projects I’ve done in a while. Let’s get started sewing this baby bib.

SUPPLIES TO MAKE BABY BIBS

• The fabric of your choosing ( I used Flannel for backside but can even use fleece)
• Rotary cutter and mat
• Sewing Pins or clips
• Thread
• Scissors
• Snaps and Snap Press (Or Velcro)
• Safety pins

• As with most sewing projects you will need an iron, ironing board, and sewing machine.

This bib will fit up to 6 – 9 months depending on the size of the baby. To make it larger extend the width and length by just sizing up and out. Be sure to cut a bigger hole for the neckline. Most people will cut the pattern right past the neckline across, then extend it up and out from the fold. The fabrics used are both flannel fabrics as they are more absorbent. Other fabrics can be used even terry cloth for back or front.

HOW TO MAKE BABY BIBS WITH FREE PATTERN

Before start cutting and sewing make sure to wash, dry and press the fabric of your choice. I have found that the end result has fewer flaws when I pre-prep my fabrics with wash, dry and press. Remember you can always customize the fabrics to your liking. Make sure to click here and print the pattern before we start cutting and sewing the baby bib.

Take the Free baby bib pattern you printed then place it on the fold of your fabric pattern side up. You can use scissors for the cutting or a Rotary and mat. I used scissors this time but usually prefer the rotary cutters especially when cutting multiples of fabrics.

Repeat the same with the backside fabric. You can use flannel or fleece, I used flannel here. The backside doesn’t have to be on a fold you can even just use the pattern you cut out from the front piece as I did.

Once you have the two pieces of fabric cut for your baby bib, place them together with the pattern side facing in (kind of like sewing a pillow, it will be flipped right side in). You can trim up any of the fabric if you like, but it will be hidden on the inside of the bib. Clip or pin the pieces together, I prefer using clips when possible on sew projects.

Stitch around the edge of the bib starting halfway through the bottom of the bib. Stitch all the way around leaving a small 1-inch opening to flip it inside out. Once you’ve sewn all the way around. Flip the bib inside out. Be sure to pull all the ends and make sure nothing is tucked.

Tuck the small open in and press with an iron. Then topstitch the hole closed. Additionally, if you’d like a nice topstitch you may top stitch all the way around the baby bib but it isn’t necessary.

The last step in how to make baby bibs with a free pattern is to affix a button, snap or velcro to keep the bib on the baby. I choose to use a snap as you can see by the picture. I have used velcro and it can work but for a cleaner look and not to itch the baby I used the snap. I used this snap press. You take and make a hole with the hole maker. Then place the snap back piece and press. Then place the front snap piece and press. Make sure the snaps work together and if not you’ll need to press tighter.

Now you know how to make baby bibs with a free pattern. I love how this one came out and there are soo many cute baby patterns out there to choose from the possibilities are endless. It is so much easier to just wash these dirty bibs then their whole outfits after eating. I loved this project soo much I think I am going to sew baby bibs every time I find out a friend is pregnant as you can never have too many bibs.
