Making my own clothing has become one of the most satisfying things I have ever done. There is just something special about making something yourself that fits perfectly. Today on Happiest Camper, I’m going to show you How To Sew A Butterfly Sleeve Top – Free Printable Pattern! This butterfly top is soft and luxurious so you can stay nice and cool. Plus this top has a  neckline that allows for no buttons or zippers, making it a fast sew. When my sewing friend, Debbie, showed me this cute top, I knew I needed some of these hanging in my closet. It is a struggle sometimes to find a cute top that I can dress up enough for dates or formal events that isn’t the same old buttondown. Those are nice, but I wanted something a little more unique. This butterfly top is just what I have been wanting and I think it turned out so nice. I made this with some stretch fabric so that it would be easy to get on and off, plus it makes it comfortable to wear all day. I used this fun print fabric, but you can choose a solid color if you like. I made several of these in different prints and colors to suit my needs.

What You’ll Need:

• 1.5 Yards Of 60″ Wide Fabric – knit with 20-30% horizontal stretch — Woven fabrics with some drape – crepe, viscose, georgette, silk, polyster 
• Free Butterfly Sleeve Top Pattern
• Matching Thread
• Iron
• Pins
• Scissors 
• Optional Rotary Cutter & Mat
• Measuring tape 
• Thread nippers
• Sewing machine
• Fabric marker
• Bodkin or Safety Pin

Printing Instructions

This butterfly sleeve top printable pattern has layers, so that you can choose to print only the size you need. To achieve this Adobe Reader must be installed on your machine or device. Adobe Reader allows you to click on the layers icon which will show you each size with an eyeball beside it. Click on the eyeball beside the size you do not want to print.

Before printing check that your printer is set to No scaling or Actual size. Set the Page orientation to Auto or Portrait. And then print page 1. Measure the 2” test square to see if it measures exactly 2”. If it does, print the remaining pages.

Trimming Pages

Cut off the right and top margins of each printed page before assembling the pattern. You can use tape or school glue to adhere your paper pattern together. 

Pattern Assembly

After the pages have been printed and trimmed as instructed above, use the quarter circles located at the corner of each page for perfect alignment.  When done your butterfly sleeve top pattern should look like this:

Once you have printed and assembled your pattern you will cut:

• Front  – Cut one on Fold
• Back – Cut one on Fold 
• Back Facing – Cut 1 on Fold
• Front Facing – Cut 1 on Fold 

Seam Allowance

Use a 3/8” seam allowance unless otherwise instructed.

Sew the facing to the top.

Clip the curved edges of the top with your fabric scissors.

Finish the raw edges of the facing with a wide zigzag stitch or serger.
