How To Make DIY Sleep Mask With Free Printable Pattern

I like to start out my sewing projects by washing, drying, and pressing my fabric. This helps it cut easier and lay nicer overall. Next, print and cut out your PDF sleep mask pattern. Then check out our post on Pattern Grading.  Use your pattern to cut out one piece of cotton fabric, one piece of flannel and one piece of the cotton quilt batting.

Measure the length of your elastic to comfortably fit around your head. On the cotton piece of fabric, align your elastic as indicated on the pattern and baste the elastic in place. Your DIY Sleep Mask is already coming together!

Pin the excess of your elastic in place and in this order, layer your pieces: Cotton piece, right side facing up, cotton batting, and flannel right side facing down. Pin the layers in place. Using your turning tool, turn the mask right side out. With a warm iron, press around the edges, and press the raw edges of the opening at the top inward. This will make it easier to sew the opening closed.

  4. On the cotton piece of fabric, align your elastic as indicated on the pattern.
  5. Baste stitch the elastic in place.
  6. Pin the excess of your elastic in place and in this order, layer your pieces: Cotton piece, right side facing up, cotton batting and flannel right side facing down.
  7. Pin pieces in place.
  8. Using a using a 3/8″ seam allowance, leaving an opening at the top as indicated on the pattern, sew around the mask.
  9. Cut notches out of the curves and if needed and turn the mask right side out.
  10. Using a warm iron, press around the edges, and press the raw edges of the opening at the top inward.
  11. Using a ¼” seam allowance, top stitch around the mask.
