How To Make A Dog Leash Sewing Tutorial
Start this sewing tutorial off by washing, drying, and pressing your fabric. This acts as a preshrink for your fabric and helps your stitches not pull out later. Since you will be wanting to wash this dog leash later, I highly recommend this step. After you have done this, cut two pieces of fabric that are 1 3/4″ x 36″. This will be the main body of the leash.
Next, lay the fabric pieces on top of each other with the right sides touching. Then clip the fabric together on one end, making sure the ends are lined up.
It’s time to sew! Sew the end together using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Be sure to do a backstitch at the start and finish. It should look like the photo above.
Now, fold the end of the fabric strip over by about 1/4 inch. Note that you should have two folds per end with wrong sides touching.
Then, fold the sides in evenly so they touch each other like in the photo.
Next, fold it in half so those folds are on top of each other.
Clip or pin in place. Then, keep that same fold going all the way down the strip clipping in place as you go. We are about halfway through this dog leash sewing tutorial!
Iron so all the folds stay in place. Slowly remove one clip at a time as you iron.
Sew all the way down one side as close to the edge as you can. Do a backstitch at the start and finish. When done, sew down the other side just the same way. Our dog leash is beginning to take shape!
Now on this dog leash sewing tutorial, take one end and fold it over by about five inches (or however large you want the handle to be) and clip in place if you like. Play with this loop so that you have the most comfortable size for your hand.
Sew down the handle by sewing about one inch from the bottom of the fold. I made kind of a box shape with an X in the middle. Then, at the very end do a zig-zag stitch to make sure it is nice and secure.
On the other end of your fabric strip, run the fabric through the end of the snap. Fold it over by about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches.
We are almost done with this diy dog leash sewing tutorial! Simply sew the fold in place just like you did the handle. I did a boxed shape with an X in the middle to make it strong.
For the final step, do a zig-zag stitch at the very end of the fold.
And that’s it! Your done with this diy dog leash sewing tutorial! We think you’ll find this is an easy way to make a new leash to walk your favorite furry friend. Personalize it with your favorite patterns of fabric, and be sure to make several so that you always have one handy for a walk at a moment’s notice.
