Summer is here and I am loving every minute of it! I have been updating my summer wardrobe and today I’m going to show you How To Make A Long Summer Skirt – Free Sewing Tutorial and Pattern! I have been looking for a lite skirt with a bit more length than I normally wear and haven’t been happy with what I am finding in-store. When my sewing friend, Debbie, showed me this sewing pattern, I knew this was the skirt I had been looking for! It is super comfortable for all-day wear and it looks great with nearly any top. It is so easy to sew as well so if you have been wanting to try your hand at making some of your own simple clothing, this skirt checks all the boxes. This skirt featured a yoga pant style waistband that makes this skirt feel almost weightless. You can color block the skirt and the waistband to suit your style if you choose. I made mine out of one solid color, but this would also look great with a simple print fabric. Whatever you choose, just make sure that your fabric has a 30% or more horizontal stretch in it so that it can move with you throughout the day.

Maybe you are looking for a shorter skirt like our wrap skirt or our skort, or maybe you want to sew a dress, if not you can enjoy this long summer skirt. We have many skirt sewing projects, but for most you’ll need some basic sewing supplies like some fabric scissors, pins, a tape measure, some thread nippers, the sewing pattern and of course your sewing machine. If you plan on sewing regularly, the investment in a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler is one of the best you can make. Gather up your sewing supplies from the list below and let’s get started!

How To Make A Long Summer Skirt – Free Sewing Tutorial and Pattern

Start this how to make a long summer skirt sewing tutorial by washing, drying, and ironing your fabric. This helps preshrink your fabric and prepares it for washing later so that your stitches don’t pull out or fray the first time you wash it. Plus, it helps make the fabric super soft. Once you have done this, use your pattern to cut out your fabric pieces according to the cut list above.

Next, take your skirt piece and fold it right sides together, pin, and sew along the seam using a 3/8″ seam allowance. I recommend using a ballpoint needle when sewing knits as it is much easier and sews better.

Finish the edges using serger or with a zigzag stitch so that your skirt has a nice clean look.

Now on this long summer skirt tutorial, we will work on the waistband for your skirt. Take the waistband piece and with the fabric right sides together, pin the short ends together. Sew them using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Fold the waistband in half along the long edge.

Now we will prep our pieces to put them together. Divide the waistband into quarters.

Divide the skirt into quarters just like you did above, lining up side seams.

Pin the skirt to the waistband aligning the side seams then align the raw edge of the skirt with the raw edge of the waistband. Head back over to your sewing machine and sew them together with that same seam allowance. Don’t forget to finish the edges with your serger or a zigzag stitch.

For the last step in the easy sew long summer skirt tutorial, we just need to finish the hem. Double fold the hem 1/2” and sew.

And that’s it! Now you know how to make a long summer skirt with free sewing tutorial and pattern! We hope you enjoyed this fun and simple sewing tutorial. I love making my own perfectly fitting clothing and this skirt will keep my cool and out of the sun on those hot days of summer.
