I had a baby shower coming in the near future and needed a quick gift idea that I knew would be useful. Given that I didn’t want to spend a lot of time sewing, I thought I would show you How To Make A No-Sew Baby Blanket! Not only is this easy no-sew baby blanket a fast work-up project, but it’s frankly really a beautiful piece. The braided edge curls over onto itself and looks very professional. I honestly prefer this method for a baby blanket, too, because the fringe method of just tying the two blanket edges together is more likely to wear out over time. But the braided edge blanket is going to last a lot longer, since there is little to no stress on the strips of fabric holding the two pieces together.
Plus, this is a really quick work-up. If you have the fabric on hand and sharp scissors, you can have this blanket made in half the time that it would take to make a sewn blanket. You can also easily personalize this no-sew blanket, either embroidering a name on it or using your Cricut to apply a vinyl design. It’s a fantastic gift idea for a baby shower that any new mom would love. Let’s get started making this no-sew baby blanket and get your little one cuddly-warm!

How To Make A No-Sew Baby Blanket
The first step in this how to make a no-sew baby blanket tutorial is to lay the two pieces of fabric wrong-side to wrong-side. This is particularly important if you’re using minky because there is a true wrong-side of minky fabric. Fleece is a little less critical to identify the wrong-side. But do take a moment to decide if you want the fluffy side out or the smooth side, if your fleece is the textured kind. Additionally, you want to make sure that the two pieces of fabric are lined up on the edges and tidy, trimming any overhang. This is going to help you get clean cuts and make that edge look nice. So, if you need to, spread the blanket out on the floor or your dining room table, because matching up those edges is critical.
Grab those sharp scissors and cut a 2-inch square from each corner of both fabric pieces. Make sure that these cuts line-up by cutting them at the same time. Repeat on all four corners of the blanket.
You can discard the squares of fabric that you remove or put them in your scraps stash. If you want to use those up, those 8 squares will be perfect for creating a little matching lovey for the baby, maybe with a little matching stuffed animal attached, if you can find one.
Next on this how to make a no-sew baby blanket tutorial we will work on the edges. Measuring from the edge of one of the cut-out squares, cut 1-inch wide strips 2-inches deep. Make sure you try to make your cuts as perpendicular to the edge of the fabric as possible, so that the braid is neat. I found that the easiest way to do this is to lay a yardstick or ruler along the edge of the blanket and make tiny snips at every 1-inch location, then move the yardstick up to the 2-inch depth and cut from my previously made snip to the 1-inch mark on the yardstick.
Repeat on all four sides of the blanket. You are about halfway through this no-sew baby blanket tutorial!
Fold each strip over onto itself about ½ inch. Make sure to grab both the top and bottom pieces of fabric with the corresponding strip. Cut a ¼-inch slit in the center of both strips. Repeat on all four sides of the blanket. Be careful to make sure that the slit goes through both pieces of fabric, but that the slit is not wide – you want that to be snug for the braids to stay snug.
Now on this how to make a no-sew baby blanket tutorial, we will create the braided effect by crocheting the two edges together using the slits you just cut. Starting at a corner-cut-out, work the first strip (both the top and bottom pieces of fabric) through the slit in the next strip to the right (both the top and bottom pieces of fabric.
Repeat this, working the strip on the left through the slit in the strip on the right all the way around the blanket. When you reach the corners, simply pull the fabric around the corner, making it round.
When you reach the end of your no-sew baby blanket, work only the bottom fabric of the final strip end through the first one, wrapping it back around to meet the top fabric of the final strip and double-knot them together tightly.
Tuck the knot inside the blanket edge to hide it. If you want to personalize your blanket, this would be the time. The braids won’t pull out and they’ll be secure enough to survive handling, even washing in the washing machine and being drug around by a growing kiddo!
And that’s it! How easy and fast is that?! This blanket is super soft and easy to make. It would make a great gift for new and expecting moms. I know I could always use more blankets around the house, and this one is so easy to make I may just make it for myself.
