cutting out mitten template

Start by using the free mitten patten template. Print and cut out the mitten template so you can lay it on your fabric. Make sure it prints to the correct scale so you end up with the correct size mittens.

folding the fabric

Lay two layers of the outer fabric on top of each other making sure it is smooth and even. Pin it together. Then pin the fleece mitten cut out on top.

The next step in sewing mittens is to trace all the way around the mitten template. with a marker. I find it worked best with a thick felt tip marker, but whatever you have on hand should work just fine.

Cut on the traced lined to cut the fabric out. Make sure you are cutting both layers and that they are not separating. This will give you the sides of your mittens! Just these steps for the inner fabric also.

sewing the bottom

Now we get to the sewing steps of the free mitten pattern. Starting with the outer fabric cutout, start sewing around the edge using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You want to start sewing about the base of the thumb and sew up and around, stoping about the same spot on the other side. This will leave the wrist area flapping. Make sure to do a backstitch at the start and finish for durability.

cutting off the extra fabric

Once you are done, trim off the extra fabric. Just be sure not to cut into your stitching.

Take your mitten and turn it so that it is right side out.

sewing the edges of the mitten

Sew the inner fabric cutout just the same as you did the outer one, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Make sure you start sewing about the base of the thumb and sew up and around, stoping about the same spot on the other side. Remember to leave that wrist area open and flapping. You are about halfway through this how to make fleece mittens with your sewing machine.

cutting off the extra seam

Trim off the extra fabric from this one too. Again, make sure you do not cut into your stitching of your mittens.

Now, we need to insert the inside out inner fabric into the right-side-out outer fabric. The best way I found to do this is simply put the inside out inner fabric on your hand. Then slide the right-side-out outer fabric over it on your hand. You are almost done with this easy mitten pattern!

layering the fabric

At the wrist flap area, fold the top fabric side edge in by about 1/4 inch at an angle. Then fold the inner fabric just under it the same.

sewing the fabric into the mitten

Sew those two folds together making sure to use a backstitch at the start and finish. Don’t sew all the way to the end. Leave about 1/4 inch from the end edge as is. Repeat this same step to finish the other three edges of the mitten.

On the top fabric trim off that 1/4 inch piece. You will still have the inner fabric sticking out 1/4 inch past that cut off. Do this on both sides of the top fabric.

Now fold the ends of the inner fabric in by 1/4 inch and also fold it over by 1/4 on the long side. This is to hide all the raw edges. Then fold it up over that top fabric by about 1/2 inch. Stitch all the way across using a backstitch at the start and finish. Make sure you are only sewing one side of the wrist and not all the way through as we don’t want to close the opening to put your hand in. You are done with this warm mitten!

Repeat these steps to make the second mitten and you’re all set! Now that you know how to make warm mittens, you can make these and give some away as gifts! These super cute set of mittens will keep your hands nice and toasty this winter!

How To Make A Mitten Pattern In A Custom Size

If the template we share for the beautiful mittens to keep your hands wamr will not fit your hand, you can easily make one just for you. As some of you may need larger or smaller mittens to fit snug and warm. Also if you don’t want to use fleece you could make sweater mittens. To amke your own free mitten pattern, simply place the palm of your hand on a piece of paper to create your own sewing pattern. Have all your fingers together with your thumb sticking out to the side. Trace all the way around your hand. You don’t need to make indents for each finger, you just need the outline of your hand.

Now, using a ruler, make little dots 1/4 inch out from the traced hand all the way around. After you have made them all the way around connect them to make another outline mark. This will be the mark you cut to make your templet and not the first one you traced. At the bottom where your wrist is, add an inch and 3/4 to it. Cut the whole thing out to use as your template sewing pattern. Now you know how to make a custom easy mitten pattern for any size hand.
