Got a bunch of old t-shirts you don’t know what to do with? Today on Happiest Camper, we show you this DIY T-Shirt Blanket No-Sew Project! This no-sew t-shirt blanket can be made in just a few short hours. There is no sewing required and the finished product is soft to the touch. Any fabric of your choice will work, but there are many benefits to using t-shirts! This tutorial requires only that you have an adult willing to help out with cutting the material into strips, and then even a tween or teen can be in charge of assembling it all together at the end. That’s one of the big benefits of making no-sew t-shirt blankets – they don’t require any sewing skills or knowledge whatsoever! They are the perfect gift for family and friends who live in a warmer climate or just want to stay warm on a chilly night! But it’s more than that – this style of blanket is a great way to save all of those old t-shirts from concerts or your favorite movies that don’t fit anymore. Or a great way to capture those memories from shirts your kiddo outgrew.

No-sew T-shirt blankets are such a great project that anyone can do. All it takes is a few old t-shirts and some time, so let’s make it! We have several other no-sew projects on our site like a no-sew dog snuffle mat, no-sew scrunchie, no-sew baby blanket, and more no-sew projects. So we show you how to have fun with and without the sewing machine!

What You’ll Need:

- Old Logo T-Shirts (to make a lap blanket, use 12, 16 or 20, for larger blankets, plan on 40-50)
- 1 -3 yds Solid Fleece Fabric
- Cardboard (or other form)
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Optional Rotary Cutter & Mat
- Fabric Marker
Here’s what you’re going to need: Several old logo t-shirts and fleece fabric (single or double-sided). How many t-shirts you need will absolutely depend on how big you plan to make your blanket. To make a lap blanket, I used 12 shirts. But you could make a slightly larger blanket with 16 or 20 shirts. Or, for larger blankets (like a king-sized blanket), you will want to plan on using 40-50 t-shirts. This is such a fun no-sew t-shirt blanket to make that your friends will ask you to make them one.
How much fleece you need will also strongly depend on how big you want your blanket. I used a little over ½ yard for the small lap blanket I was making, but for a larger one, you’ll want to use 1-3 yards. Again, it all depending on what size you ultimately want the blanket to be.
How to Make This DIY T-Shirt Blanket No-Sew Project

Start this diy t-shirt blanket no-sew project by laying out all your old t-shirts. Then, measure the largest logo area you want to keep intact. This will need to be a square measurement. So if you want to keep an 8-inch by 6-inch logo area, make your square 8-inches by 8-inches. Then add 4-inches on each side. So, in our example, that would be a 12-inch by 12-inch square for your base, ultimately. Using the base measurement (12-inches by 12-inches in my example), cut out a cardboard square to this size, or use any other 12-inch square form (I found a cutting mat that was the right size). This will be your template.

Place the template, with the logo centered, on top of each shirt and trace the template onto the shirt.

Next on this DIY t-shirt blanket, we will cut out each shirt square. You can discard the remainder of the shirt or use the remaining portion of the shirt to make an additional square. I recommend at this juncture that you lay the squares out and make sure you have enough squares for the size blanket desired.

Cut 4-inch long slits on each side of each shirt square spaced 1-inch apart. Where the corners meet and you are cutting out a square, you can discard the cutout space.

To make this go a little faster, you can fold each shirt square in half and cut both sides of the shirt square at one time, if you so choose. This will help speed up your no-sew t-shirt blanket.

Do this to all of your shirts.

Next on this DIY t-shirt project, we will start putting them all together! Place two shirt squares face down, side-by-side, with their slits lined up.

Starting at one end of the slits, tie the slits together with a knot. Repeat, tying together each of the slits in the two shirt squares, joining them securely.

Place a third shirt square in line with the other two, face down, then repeat tying the slits together, adding a third shirt square to the chain. Repeat tying your squares together in a single line until you have achieved the length of the blanket you desire. Repeat tying your squares together on the side of the first row, joining the squares on both sides as you go.

When you have used all of the shirt squares and have your shirt pieces fit together, lay it out and measure the finished size. Set aside the t-shirt portion of the blanket.

Now on this diy t-shirt blanket project, we will make the fleece backing for our blanket. Lay the fleece out and trim it to fit the same size as your t-shirt portion of the blanket.

Cut 4-inch long slits into the edge of the fleece, spaced 1-inch apart. To make this go a little faster, you can fold the fleece in half and cut both sides of the fabric at one time, if you so choose.

Where the corners meet and you are cutting out a square, you can discard the cutout space.

To start putting them together, layout the fleece, wrong-side up, and place the t-shirt portion of the blanket on top of the fleece, wrong-side down. Align the slits.

Starting at one corner, tie the slits together from the t-shirt and the fleece, in a knot. Repeat, tying together each of the slits, joining them securely. This is such a fun DIY no-sew project for anyone to make.

When you have reached the beginning of the slits and tied them all together, get ready to snuggle because your DIY No-Sew T-Shirt Blanket is complete! Isn’t that awesome?! So easy and relatively quick, too. You can seriously make this no-sew t-shirt blanket in your spare time while watching TV or have it along with you on a car trip. No needles, no thread, just a little prep and a lot of knot-tying.
